Introduction to Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing

Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing

An  Overview

The purpose of this course is to set the scene for an inquisitive mind that desires to know and understand how Geographical information systems (GIS) work. It provides a general overview of the terms, concepts, and ideas which underlie GIS.

As the course name suggests, GIS is a tool for working with geographic information. The course will explore what sets GIS apart from other forms of information systems.

GIS has rapidly evolved over the last couple of decades in terms of both technical and processing capabilities, and today is widely used all over the world for a wide range of purposes.

The course is designed for;

  • Urban planners in setting and management of city plans,
  • Biologists in epidemiological assessment and analysis,
  • Natural hazard response preparation and management,
  • Geologists, geo-informatics, and mining engineers in identifying suitable site selections,
  • Agriculturalists, and foresters in optimizing production putting into consideration a number of factors,
  • Hydrological engineers studying water quality and source sustainability,
  • Business executives and operators in understanding their market.
